Growing Tulips in Southwestern PA

Planting Instructions

  • Plant bulbs outdoors in fall before the ground freezes

    • Choose a sunny location with well drained soil.

    • Plant bulbs 6-8” deep, pointed end up, 4-6” apart. We plant our bulbs closer like eggs in a carton for cut flowers, but for landscaping they are typically spaced out or planted in clusters.

    • You can also add bulb fertilizer with the bulb, available at the big box stores.

  • Water well after planting.

    • Do not overwater in spring - it can lead to bulb rot.

  • If you choose to cut your tulips for your own home bouquets, be aware that will affect the bloom for next year and make take a few seasons for the flower to recover.
